The Washington Commanders’ tight end John Bates competes in the National Football League. He is 1.98 meters tall and 117 kilograms. Initially attending Nyssa High School, he eventually transferred to Lebanon High School, where he participated in football. In addition to being chosen All-MWVC in 2014 and 2015 as a wide receiver, defensive back, and punter, he was named All-Legislative three times as a senior.

He attended Boise State University and played collegiate football for the Boise State Broncos. He redshirted in his true freshman year of 2016 and participated in all 14 games as a redshirt freshman in 2017. He made two starts and caught three passes for a total of 34 yards.

As a redshirt sophomore in 2018, he participated in 13 games, starting nine of them, and was named to the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List. By the end of the season, he had 10 receptions for 155 yards and a score. He started four of the five games he played in as a redshirt senior in 2020, and he tied his career high with five catches.

After being picked by the Washington Football Team with the 124th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Bates signed his four-year rookie contract in May 2021. In a game in December 2021, he caught a pass from Kyle Allen and scored his first NFL touchdown on it after fumbling the pass, which he ultimately recovered.
