He is known to have begun his high school education at Bloomington High School where he played offensive tackle and defensive on the football team, and competed in the shot put and discus on the track and field team.

John after completing high school furthered his education into college at  Illinois State, where he redshirted as a true freshman and then transferred to  Arkansas over offers from Indiana, Texas, Penn State, Iowa, Arizona State, Tennessee, Michigan and USC.
