Berti played baseball for the school’s baseball team while he was a student at Troy High School in Troy, Michigan.

In the 36th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft, the Oakland Athletics selected Berti, but he declined to sign.

In order to play college baseball for the Bowling Green Falcons baseball team, Berti enrolled at Bowling Green State University.

With a .423 batting average, 93 hits, and six triples, Berti tied the single-season record for hits by a Falcons player. Another record was his 17 triples in a career.

He participated in the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Brewster Whitecaps’ collegiate summer baseball program in 2010.

In the 18th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft, the Toronto Blue Jays picked Berti with the 559th overall pick.

He had 23 stolen bases and hit .291 with 21 RBI while playing for the Vancouver Canadians in the Short Season-A Northwest League.

He participated in 2012 with the Dunedin Blue Jays of the Advanced-A Florida State League and the Lansing Lugnuts of the Class A Midwest League (FSL).

Berti had a combined .241 batting average in 110 games, hitting 2 home runs, 40 RBI, and 34 stolen bases. Berti, a Dunedin player in 2013, led the FSL in base stealers with 56.

Berti participated in the 2013–14 Australian Baseball League (ABL) season for the Canberra Cavalry during that offseason.

He hit .309 with 18 RBI while robbing 31 bases in 46 games, setting an ABL record.  In the 2013 Asia Series, he stole four additional bases.
