Heim attended Amherst Central High School in Snyder, NY, and Kenmore East High School in Tonawanda, NY. He committed to play collegiate baseball for the Michigan State Spartans at Michigan State University by signing a letter of intent.

On April 6, 2021, Heim hit his first major league home run off Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Tommy Milone. Against Seattle Mariners pitcher Diego Castillo on July 31, Heim blasted home runs from both sides of the bat, including his first career walk-off home run.

On August 1, he hit another walk-off home run against Seattle, becoming the first player in Texas Rangers history and the first rookie in MLB history to record two straight walk-off home runs. Heim hit.196/.239/.358/.598 in 82 games in 2021, with 10 home runs and 32 RBI.
