Heim was taken 129th overall in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Rather than enrolling at Michigan State, he signed with Baltimore and received a $389,700 signing bonus.

That season, he made his professional debut with the GCL Orioles, where he lasted the entire 2013 season, slashing .185/.275/.247 in 27 games

Hiem batted .196 with one home run and seven RBIs in 46 games for the GCL Orioles and the Aberdeen IronBirds in 2014, and he batted .248 with one home run and 16 RBIs in 43 games for the Delmarva Shorebirds in 2015.

He started the year with the Frederick Keys.

The Orioles traded Heim to the Tampa Bay Rays on August 1, 2016, in exchange for Steve Pearce. He was assigned to the Charlotte Stone Crabs by Tampa Bay and spent the rest of the season there.

He had a .217 batting average with eight home runs and 33 RBIs in 102 games between Frederick and Charlotte.
