The Baltimore Orioles selected Heim in the 2013 MLB draft in the fourth round, 129th overall. Instead of attending Michigan State, he enrolled with Baltimore and received a $389,700 signing bonus.

In 2013, he made his professional baseball debut with the GCL Orioles, where he played 27 games and batted.185/.275/.247.

It was during this time that he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the third round of the 2013 MLB draft and signed as a free agent by the Delmarva Shorebirds of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The Frederick Keys were the team he joined at the start of 2016.
