A second-round pick of the Royals in 2018, Bowlan made a strong first impression with Double-A Northwest Arkansas last year and appeared to be headed for the Majors sooner rather than later.

This season, he had pitched 16 1/3 innings and surrendered only three runs while striking out 23 batters. A pull in his elbow forced him to leave Springfield’s game after just two outs in his fourth start. He was slated for Tommy John’s surgery in Kansas City a week later.

When the Royals selected Jonathan with the 58th overall choice in the draft, Mark became the second-highest-drafted Tigers player in school history.
