He consequently gained popularity on public draft boards, with some believing he would go early on day three. However, two days prior to the draft, everything changed.

Two days before the NFL draft, Cooper received bad news from doctors that there was an irregularity in his electrocardiogram test. Cooper had to have three separate heart procedures in the offseason to correct the irregular heartbeat.
