At St. John Paul II High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, Trevino participated in high school baseball. He also participated in college baseball for the Oral Roberts University Golden Eagles. In 2013, he participated in collegiate summer baseball for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod Baseball League before receiving his degree from the university.

He was chosen by the Texas Rangers in the sixth round of the MLB draft in 2014. That year, he joined the Class A Short Season Spokane Indians of the Northwest League, where he started his professional career. He was given by the Rangers a contract in 2016 to play for the Class A-Advanced California League’s High Desert Mavericks, where he won a minor league Gold Glove Award. He was promoted to the major leagues by the Rangers in June 2018, and on June 15, 2018, the Rangers played in a game against the Colorado Rockies. He was traded to the New York Yankees in April 2022.
