As a child, Donaldson lived with his mother Lisa in Pensacola before moving to Faith Academy in Mobile, Alabama with his friend P. J. Walters.

Donaldson played baseball his sophomore year at Pace High School in Pace, Florida. Besides baseball, Donaldson played football, basketball, and basketball at Faith College.

His senior year saw him named Alabama’s finest shortstop and pitcher, hitting an impressive .515 while leading Faith Academy to a Class 4A state championship.



At Faith Academy, Donaldson smashed 55 hits, including six triples, 21 doubles, and a total of 55 RBIs, in a single season (54).

Donaldson played wide receiver, defensive back, and punter on the football team, and his senior year saw him break a school record with 11 interceptions.

 

Donovan attended Auburn University, where he played catcher and third base for the Auburn Tigers baseball team. Donaldson made 39 starts at third base and hit .294 with seven home runs as a freshman in 2005.

He also began learning to catch during that season. He hit .276 in his sophomore season and led the club with 10 home runs, as well as 15 pickoffs and 38 strikeouts.

When he was a member with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 2006, Donaldson was an All-Star and smashed .302. He was selected as a Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American in 2007 as well.
