Josh Hader, a pitcher, was drafted in the 19th round of the 2012 amateur draft by the Baltimore Orioles out of a high school in neighboring Millersville, Maryland.

Dean Albany was the scout. He signed with the GCL Orioles and Aberdeen IronBirds shortly after being chosen and went 2-0, 1.88 with two saves in 17 relief appearances, striking out 48 batters in 28 2/3 innings.

Despite a 3-6 record in 17 starts, he was moved to starting in 2013 and pitched successfully for the Delmarva Shorebirds of the South Atlantic League.

In 85 innings pitched, he had a 2.65 ERA and 79 strikeouts. He was dealt to the Houston Astros on July 31st, along with OF L.J. Hoes, for P Bud Norris.

Hader pitched a 1-0 no-hitter against the Bakersfield Blaze for the Lancaster JetHawks on May 13, 2014, combining with two relievers; he tossed six hitless frames before handing the ball to J.D. Osborne, who went two innings, and Daniel Minor, who won the save with a spotless ninth inning.

Hader finished 9-2 with a 2.71 ERA in 22 games for Lancaster, which is impressive given Lancaster’s reputation as the finest hitting environment in the minors.

Late in the season, he was promoted to the AA Texas League’s Corpus Christi Hooks, where he went 1-1 in five starts and finished with a combined record of 10-3, 3.29 in 27 games, 19 of which he started.

He threw 103 innings and fanned 112 batters. For his efforts at Lancaster, he was selected the California League Pitcher of the Year at the end of the season.
