The lack of playing time and the lack of a scholarship at Barry University convinced James to look elsewhere for a college experience.

James was initially looking for a college in his native state of Florida, but he ended up transferring to Western Oklahoma State College, an NJCAA DII school in Altus, Oklahoma.

One of his former coaches in the Virgin Islands referred him to Western Oklahoma coach Kurt Russel. It had been five straight NCJAA DII World Series qualifiers at Western Oklahoma before James arrived, capturing a national championship in 2011 and losing a finals matchup in 2012.

Additionally, Casey Sadler, Juan Perez, and Angel Castro are all WOSC grads who have played in the MLB. When James was a student at Western Oklahoma, he tried to return to the infield, but his instructors told him that he would have better luck as a pitcher.

He was a starter for the Pioneers in 2014, with a 3.21 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 61.2 innings, after redshirting the 2013 season.
