With Toronto signing top free agent George Springer in the off-season to add to an already strong group of outfielders that includes Teoscar Hernandez, Randal Grichuk, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., and a very good spare outfielder in Jonathan Davis, he was expecting to spend all or most of 2021 in the minor leagues.
Springer, on the other hand, began the year on the injured list, while Hernandez was forced into isolation on April 9th after coming into touch with a COVID-19-infected person.
Josh was summoned to the team’s headquarters, and unsure of what was going on, he assumed he had gotten himself into some sort of difficulty.
Instead, he was urged to hurry over to TD Ballpark, the Jays’ temporary home in Dunedin, FL, because he was scheduled to start that night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels.
He got off to a shaky start against Andrew Heaney, a left-handed pitcher who was having a great night. He finished 0 for 3 with a pair of strikeouts and a hit-by-pitch.
The next day, he had a four-hit game in a 15-1 thrashing of the Angels, with his first hit coming on a brilliant bunt down the third base line against Jose Quintana, and later coming in to score in a seven-run second inning, one of four runs he would score that evening.
