He chose Michigan State University as his collegiate football home after graduating from high school.
He participated in the Michigan State Spartans football team while attending Michigan State. He began the 2016 season as a wide receiver, but before the fifth game of the year, he was switched to cornerback. During his 34-game playing career, he recorded 130 tackles, three interceptions, 0.5 sacks, and one score.
He registered for the 2019 NFL Draft following his junior year. Layne was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 83rd overall pick in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He made just three tackles during his brief 10 game 2019 appearances.
On July 29, 2020, the Steelers put him on the COVID-19 list and reserve list. On August 11, 2020, he became active. He played in all 16 of the Steelers’ games and recorded 22 tackles in 2018. The Steelers released him on August 30, 2022. He was picked up by the New York Giants off waivers on August 31, 2022.
