As a sophomore in 2013, he took part in all 13 games and made 34 tackles, 22 of which were solo, as well as three pass break-ups.

He made all 13 of his starts in 2014 as a junior, starting the first seven at free safety and the last six at right cornerback. He played free safety for all 12 games as a senior and finished third on the team in tackles with 67. With the 98th overall choice in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos picked Simmons. He played in the Broncos’ season-opening game against the Carolina Panthers, marking his NFL debut.
