Melvin Emanuel “B. J.” Upton Jr. was a professional baseball outfielder in the United States. He pitched for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays / Rays, Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays in Major League Baseball (MLB).

 

Upton has been a member of the Atlanta Braves and the San Diego Padres as well as his brother, Justin Upton.

They are the first two brothers in MLB history to be drafted first and second (in separate years). In addition, the Upton brothers are the first brothers to smash 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in the same season.

Melvin and Yvonne Upton gave birth to Upton. After playing college football and basketball at Norfolk State, Yvonne worked as a teacher and Melvin worked as a scout for the Kansas City Royals, a mortgage broker, and a college basketball referee in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

 

Before high school, Upton was a member of the same travel baseball team as Mark Reynolds, David Wright, and Ryan Zimmerman, among others.

 

Upton attended Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake, Virginia, and graduated with honors.

 

Upton batted .462 (12-for-26) in nine games with the 18U United States national baseball team. In qualifying for the 2002 World Junior Baseball Championship, the squad went 9–2 and finished second in the Pan American Baseball Confederation.
