Wilson was picked by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 37th round (1126th overall) of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft out of high school, but he declined to sign and instead enrolled at Fresno State University, where he played college baseball for the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Wilson was chosen to the College World Series All-Tournament Team in his junior season when Fresno State won the 2008 College World Series.

Wilson was traded to the New York Yankees on November 12, 2014, in exchange for Francisco Cervelli.

Wilson was employed as a setup pitcher during the seventh inning by Yankees manager Joe Girardi in 2015, with Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller pitching the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

Wilson was traded to the Cincinnati Reds on July 28, 2021, along with Luis Cessa, for Jason Parker.
