Hayes began his professional baseball career when the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him 32nd overall in the first round of the 2015 MLB draft. Hayes declined his collegiate offer and signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates, hitting.308 with 20 RBI in 56 games with the Gulf Coast League Pirates and West Virginia Black Bears in 2015.

In his 2021 season debut against the Cubs, Hayes blasted a home run in his first at-bat. On April 4, 2021, Hayes was placed on the 10-day injured list after leaving a game the day before with a left wrist discomfort. On May 9, Hayes was placed on the injured reserve list for 60 days.

He was called upon on June 3rd. On June 11, Hayes became the first Pirate to achieve 20 career extra-base hits, a game ahead of Barry Bonds.

Hayes is the younger brother of former minor league pitcher Tyree Hayes and the son of Charlie Hayes. Charles Dewayne Hayes is a former third baseman with the FCL Phillies and a former coach for the team. Charlie Hayes was born on May 29, 1965.

For the 2018 and 2019 seasons, Charlie Hayes has been named as a coach for the FCL Phillies.
