He was a member of the University of Arizona’s Arizona Wildcats before being taken in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Newman attended Poway High School in Poway, California, and graduated with honors. In his sophomore year, he made the varsity baseball team at his high school.



In his junior year, Newman had a .404 batting average and was recruited by the University of Arizona, University of Oregon, and University of California, Los Angeles.

He is committed to play for the Arizona Wildcats baseball team on a college baseball scholarship.

As a freshman, Newman took over as the Wildcats’ starting shortstop from Alex Mejia. Newman had a .336 batting average as a freshman, which was good for 11th best in the Pac-12 Conference (Pac-12).

Louisville Slugger named him to the Freshman All-America squad, and he was the only freshman to be named to the All-Pac-12 Conference team.

As a sophomore, he hit .304 and was chosen to the Pac-12 All-Conference team for the second time.

Before his junior year, he was added to the Golden Spikes Award watch list.

In the summers of 2013 and 2014, Newman played collegiate baseball for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL), winning the league’s batting average title both years and the league MVP award in 2014.

In 2020, he was inducted into the CCBL Hall of Fame. Newman was chosen to the All-Pac-12 Conference team in 2015.
