The Pirates picked Newman in the first round of the 2015 MLB draft, with the 19th overall pick.

To make his professional debut, he signed with the Pirates and reported to the West Virginia Black Bears of the Class A-Short Season New York–Penn League.

In August, the Pirates assigned Newman to the Class A South Atlantic League’s West Virginia Power. He hit .257 with two home runs, 17 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases in 61 games between the two teams.

He began the 2016 season with the Class A-Advanced Florida State League’s Bradenton Marauders and was later moved to the Class AA Eastern League’s Altoona Curve, where he batted .320 with five home runs and 52 RBIs in 102 games.

In 122 games in 2017, he batted .267 with four home runs, 41 RBIs, and a .675 OPS for both Altoona and the Indianapolis Indians of the Class AAA International League.

Newman was listed as Pittsburgh’s seventh-best prospect by MLB.com heading into the 2018 season. He batted .302 in 102 games for Indianapolis before being promoted to the major leagues by the Pirates on August 16.

Newman’s first walk-off hit, a single, helped the Pirates upset the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 in 10 innings on April 6, 2019.

In 2019, he hit .308/.353/.446, tied for first in the National League with 22 infield hits and led the league in at bats per strikeout (8.0). Newman hit .224/.281/.276 for Pittsburgh in 2020, with one home run and ten RBIs.
