Smith was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft in the fourth round. He signed with the Bluefield Blue Jays for a signing bonus of $405,100.

Smith slugged.271 with eight home runs, 43 RBI, and nine stolen bases in 61 games with Bluefield. Lansing and Dunedin Blue Jays, he hit .302/.358/.528 with 25 homers, 90 RBI, and 29 stolen bases in 129 games at Class-A Lansing and Advanced-A Dunedin in 2018.

 

As a full-time player with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats in 2019, Smith pounded the ball for an above-average average (.209) while racking up an impressive (61 RBI) and 11 stolen bases total.

The Arizona Fall League’s Scottsdale Scorpions offered him a chance to participate in 18 games following the regular season.

There was no minor league season in 2020 because of COVID-19 epidemic, therefore he didn’t get to play professional baseball.

Prior to his promotion to the majors in 2021, Smith was assigned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, where he hit .286 with 19 home runs and 63 RBIs.

Stan Barron Most Valuable Player Award, given to the Bisons team MVP by his teammates in 2021, was his prize.

 

Blue Jays picked Smith’s contract on August 18, 2021, and he was brought up to the main leagues on August 18. Against Detroit Tigers starter Matthew Boyd, Smith blasted his first career home run.

 

Smith, Gunnar Hoglund, Zach Logue and Kirby Snead were traded to the Oakland Athletics for Matt Chapman on March 16, 2022.
