He was raised in Oxford, Alabama, where he was born. He played football while he was a student at Oxford High School. He played for the black team in the Under Armour All-American Game.



He was selected as a finalist for the High School Butkus Award, which is presented each year to the top linebacker in the country. Additionally, he garnered an honorable mention on the Class 6A All-State Football Team and was named to the 2011 ESPN All-Alabama Football Team. He participated in collegiate football for Louisiana State University’s LSU Tigers.

He played in seven games as a true freshman, started two of them, and made 12 tackles. He started nine out of the 13 games as a sophomore.
