He was rated as the greatest dual-threat quarterback in his class and a five-star prospect by ESPN, Scout.com, and 247Sports. He made a commitment to play baseball and football for Texas A&M University in May 2014. After playing football with the Texas A&M Aggies for a year, he switched to the University of Oklahoma in December 2015.

The Cardinals choose to execute his fifth-year option in April 2022. In July 2022, he decided to extend his contract with the Cardinals, agreeing to a five-year, $230.5 million deal.
