The wide receiver, who is a native of Dalton, Georgia, had his secondary education at Dalton High School. As a student-athlete, he was very active in more than one sport. He played football, baseball, and track and field.

McGowan became his school’s football team captain as a senior, and he was instrumental in guiding the team to the top spot in the Georgia 6A state rankings. He was named to the all-state honorable mention team, as well as the first team for both all-region and all-area.



McGowan went to Northwestern University after high school. He played college football for the Northwestern Wildcats from 2017 to 2020. He played in 11 games and recorded five receptions for 51 yards in 2017, making him one of 13 true freshmen to get regular-season game action.

During his second year of college football in 2018, he participated in all 13 games and finished with 16 receptions, 283 yards, and two touchdowns.

McGowan transferred to the Georgia Institute of Technology during his senior year. He only played one season with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. During his one and only season at Georgia Tech, he appeared in 11 games and started 10 of them.
