As a sought-after athlete, Johnson had offers from Kansas and SMU. He made his final judgment by choosing Kansas on June 2, 2016.

Kyron Johnson attended the University of Kansas and played for the Kansas Jayhawks for five seasons.

Johnson’s first season with the Jayhawks was spent mostly on special teams. He participated in eight of the team’s contests and recorded 17 tackles. He was promoted to the starting lineup as a sophomore and made the first start of his career against Nicholls.

Johnson made the decision to play for a fifth season after the COVID-19 epidemic reduced the 2020 season. This decision was made possible by the NCAA’s decision to offer an additional year of eligibility to athletes as a result of the pandemic.

During his senior year (2021), he was honored by being named to the Big 12’s second all-conference team.
