He played football while he was a student at Selma High School. At Tennessee State University, he participated in collegiate football for the Tennessee State Tigers football team. As a junior, he started six games as left guard.

In 2019, he made 12 starts at left guard and left tackle, contributing to an offense that gained more than 400 yards per game on average. He was chosen for the first team of the Ohio Valley Conference. In addition, he took part in the Hula Bowl all-star game. In the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears selected Simmons with the 227th overall choice.
