Joyner Then decided to move to St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This is a private school and George Smith is the head football coach. St. Thomas Aquinas was led by talented running backs Giovani Bernard and James White and went undefeated throughout the season.

They extended their win streak, which had begun in 2007, all the way up to 37 wins, before falling to Manatee High School by a score of 28–20 in the Class 5A state semifinal at Hawkins Stadium in Bradenton, Florida.
