Lourdes Yunielki Gurriel Castillo Jr., a left fielder with the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball, was born in Cuba on October 10, 1993.

Before leaving Cuba, he played for Sancti Spiritus and the Industriales in the Cuban National Series. Following his defection, Gurriel was considered one of the top international prospects.

In 2010, at the age of 16, Gurriel made his debut with Sancti Spiritus in the Cuban National Series. Gurriel was used as a pinch hitter. 1600 in 16 games with 15 at-bats.

Gurriel played in 55 games the next year, batting.227 with three home runs and 16 runs batted in (RBI). Gurriel hit.253 in 67 games during his final campaign with Sancti Spiritus, contributing 32 RBI and four home runs.

Gurriel was rated as the sixth-best international prospect available when Major League Baseball declared him a free agent in August 2016. He had a skill demonstration in September at Rod Carew Stadium in Panama, where 60 MLB scouts were present. Gurriel and the Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a seven-year, $22 million contract on November 12.

Gurriel participated in the Blue Jays’ spring training before being transferred on March 17 to the Dunedin Blue Jays of the Advanced-A Florida State League. Due to a leg injury, Gurriel had to start the season on the injured list.

On April 18, he made his minor league debut, although he departed the game due to the same ailment recurring. Gurriel played in 18 games for Dunedin before being promoted to the Double-A Eastern League’s New Hampshire Fisher Cats on July 12.

Gurriel played 64 games in all of 2017 and had a batting average of.229 with five home runs and 36 RBI. During the offseason, he participated for the Peoria Javelinas of the Arizona Fall League (AFL).
