Luis Gil made his major league debut on August 3, 2021, as a starter for the New York Yankees against the Baltimore Orioles when planned starter Gerrit Cole tested positive for COVID-19 and had to be substituted with only a few hours’ notice.

Gil was brought up from the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and was outstanding, allowing no runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six in six innings to earn the 13-1 victory.

Gil was initially signed by the Minnesota Twins on February 12, 2015, as an international free agent. In 2016, he was sent to the GCL Twins but did not pitch at all.

That year, he appeared in 16 relief games for the DSL Twins, finishing 1-2 with a 4.63 ERA. In 2017, he was back where he started, this time pitching as a starter for the DSL Twins.

He played in 14 games, posting a 0-2, 2.59 ERA, 41 2/3 innings, and 49 strikeouts. He was exchanged for OF Jake Cave by the Yankees on March 16, 2018.

That year, he did make his debut in the United States, pitching for the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League and the Pulaski Yankees of the Appalachian League, posting a 2-3, 1.96 ERA in 12 starts.

According to Baseball America, he was an All-Star Rookie League player.
