Voit was born in Wildwood, Missouri. Growing up, he went to  Lafayette High School which is in Wildwood, Missouri.

He was a first baseman and third baseman for the Lafayette baseball team his first three years and a catcher in his senior year.

Voit was also an outstanding fullback and middle linebacker for their football team.

As a football player, Voit drew interest from NCAA Division I clubs, but shoulder injuries halted his career.

Voit was drafted in the 32nd round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft by the Kansas City Royals, but he did not sign.

Voit attended Missouri State University, where he played four years of college baseball for the Missouri State Bears.

Voit was selected as a Cape Cod Baseball League all-star in 2011 while playing collegiate summer baseball with the Harwich Mariners.

In 62 games in 2012, he batted .298 with six home runs and 46 runs batted in (RBIs). He tore the labrum in his right shoulder, though, and went undrafted in the 2012 MLB draft.

He appeared in 54 games as a senior in 2013, hitting .299 with two home runs and 30 RBIs. Voit was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 22nd round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft following his senior year.
