After taking a chance on himself, Makai Polk filed for the 2022 NFL Draft, but many believed he would have been better off staying for another year at Mississippi State.
However, the MSU receiver had already decided that if he had a good season after transferring from Cal, he would depart to chase his NFL goals. His decision was solidified by Starkville’s record-breaking season.
What he had hoped for ended up being a bitter disappointment. According to a report from On3, even though Baltimore did not select Polk in the draft, he signed with the team as a free agent on Saturday.
Polk’s ability to analyze defenses and identify openings to generate space was a major factor in his success in the air raid offense. Five of his nine touchdowns were scored inside the 20-yard line, demonstrating that his skills were not restricted to deep passes.
Polk has played in 85 percent of his team’s offensive snaps this season, reducing his time off the field to a minimum for a unit that ranks first in the SEC in time of possession.
Although he stands at respectable 6-foot-3 inches tall, Polk only weighs 195 pounds and lacks the pace to compensate for his little frame. He ran a disappointing sub-4.6 40-yard sprint at the NFL Combine, and his disappointment was evident at MSU’s Pro Day.
Steve Spurrier Jr., who coaches the outside receivers at State, has gone on record as saying he thinks Polk should have stayed at Mississippi State for another year. Polk, though, had already made up his mind well before his year in Starkville had even begun.
Makai Polk Contract
Makai Polk agreed to terms with the Baltimore Ravens on a three-year, $2,575,000 contract that included a $15,000 signing bonus and a $20,000 guarantee.
