The 2020 NFL Draft didn’t officially begin until Baltimore Ravens fifth-round pick Broderick Washington signed. The Ravens have a 10-man rookie class, but with training camp starting soon, they are still working out contract details.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team persisted in its quest and reached an agreement with linebacker Malik Harrison, a third-round pick.
By this pact, eight of Baltimore’s ten draft picks will have signed. The Ravens are down to just first-round linebacker Patrick Queen and third-round wide receiver Devin Duvernay.
According to Over The Cap’s rookie salary projections, the two will count for a combined $3.04 million in 2020. According to OTC, Harrison will make $818,073 in 2020, and his four-year contract is worth around $4.5 million.
Previous collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) allowed for entirely unrestricted rookie contracts, which not only led to ludicrous deals for players who had yet to play a single snap but also frequently resulted in holdouts that would last far into training camp and even the regular season.
Although the new CBAs have mostly eliminated harsh negotiations and holdouts by creating a slotted salary structure for draft picks, there have still been a few players who haven’t been signed prior to training camp and have missed time because of it.
After being selected third overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa signed his contract late in the month of August, causing him to lose a substantial amount of time.
The Ravens defense will rely heavily on Harrison this year. Baltimore had to draft Harrison and Queen so early in 2020 because of the team’s dire need at inside linebacker after Patrick Onwuasor and Josh Bynes left via free agency.
In four years at Ohio State, Harrison recorded 205 tackles, 29 for a loss, 9 sacks, 1 interception, and 3 fumble recoveries.
