The general manager of the Baltimore Ravens, Eric DeCosta, gave a press conference on Friday and covered a range of offseason-related subjects. The future of cornerback Marcus Peters was one such subject.
After tearing his ACL before Week 1, Peters was forced to miss the whole 2021 season. The three-time Pro Bowler’s absence was noticeable as the Ravens finished with the NFL’s 32nd-ranked pass defense, which in part prompted Wink Martindale to resign as defensive coordinator.
Although it has been anticipated that Peters will return to the team in good health in 2022, there have been rumors that the organization would want to transfer him (either through a trade or release) in order to free up more salary space.
When DeCosta told fans that Peters was anticipated to make a comeback in 2022, that idea appeared to have been put to rest.
Peters’ three-year, $42 million contract extension with the organization, which he signed in December of 2019, will soon be coming to an end. He will have one of the largest cap hits on the squad this season, at $15.5 million.
However, at any moment during the offseason, the Ravens might release or trade him in order to free up $10 million in cap space. The rumors that the Ravens could want to transfer him made sense for a franchise that is so cash-strapped.
Currently, Baltimore has only $14 million in cap space, and while they may expand that amount by cutting guys like Alejandro Villanueva, taking Peters’ contract off the books is undoubtedly the best option to do it.
