He turned down competing scholarship offers from Washington and California in favor of committing to play college football at the University of Utah. He participated in football with the Utah Utes. He earned first team All-Pac-12 honors in 2015 after making 13 starts and totaling 65 tackles and 5 interceptions.

He signed a four-year, $6.24 million contract with the New Orleans Saints in June 2017, which included a $2.67 million signing bonus and a $3.42 million guarantee. The Saints gave Williams the franchise tag in March 2021. On March 30, 2021, he signed the one-year tender. Williams agreed to a five-year, $70 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens in March 2022.
