In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, when rosters were constantly changing as a result of the unique conditions, outfielder Mark Mathias was one of many players to make his major league debut.

Mark Mathias was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers on November 20, 2019, as part of a minor league deal. The Cleveland Indians selected him in the third round of the amateur 2015 draft out of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

He made his debut on August 4th and served as a valuable utility player for the Brewers, filling in at designated hitter and five other positions in just 16 games.

He had 2 runs and 4 RBIs while hitting .278. He trained with the squad at a different location for the rest of the year.

When he had a shoulder injury in spring training and was forced to miss the whole 2021 season, he was prepared to contend for a full-time position on the Brewers’ bench.

He initially agreed to undergo a non-surgical rehab program with the team physicians, but when it didn’t work, he had surgery in May, which required him to take a lot of rest.

He claimed he kept himself occupied by listening to the audio of every major league team’s game in order to accurately simulate being at the stadium.

He continued, “My girl worried that was going to be bad on me mentally, but it helped me,” citing how it was beneficial that the Brewers had a successful season and won the division.

He also kept busy by enrolling in real estate classes in order to get ready for a future career after football.

The major leaguers were barred from participating in spring training in 2022 when he was ready to play again, but by that time he had been removed from the 40-man roster and was qualified to participate in the team’s minor league camp, which was fortunate given how little game action he had received in the previous two seasons.
