After a season in which Maldonado batted.172, the New York Times called him “perhaps the worst hitter in baseball” in October 2021, and Sports Illustrated said that he “very probably could be the worst-hitting daily player in MLB history.”

During the 2004 Major League Baseball draft, Maldonado was selected by the Anaheim Angels in the 27th round. That year, he batted for the Arizona League Angels, a team for rookies. It was his first season playing professionally.

Maldonado was exchanged by the Cubs for outfielder Tony Kemp by the Houston Astros on July 31, 2019. In Game 2 of the World Series, against Washington Nationals reliever Javy Guerra, he blasted the first home run of his professional career. The result was a 12–3 Houston loss.
