Bush had only played as high as Double-A, two levels below the Major League level, prior to his debut on May 13, 2016, due to a slew of personal and legal issues.

In 2009, he was dealt from the Padres to the Toronto Blue Jays, however he was never used by the Blue Jays. After that, he spent time with the Tampa Bay Rays before being discharged in 2012 due to a drunk driving incident.

In December 2012, he pled no contest to charges relating to the event and was sentenced to 51 months in state prison. After serving 39 months in jail, he joined the Texas Rangers as a free agent.

Bush graduated from San Diego’s Mission Bay High School. He was a strong major league prospect at shortstop, where his defense and arm strength made him a top prospect.

With 11 home runs and 35 runs batted in, he had a.450 batting average (RBIs). He also pitched, with a fastball of 94 mph and a good curveball.

Bush had a 5–1 record, two saves, and a 0.73 ERA in five starts (ERA). Bush was widely regarded as one of the best five-tool players to ever graduate from high school.

In high school, he also played soccer and ran track.

The San Diego Padres drafted him first overall in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft, originally as a shortstop.

He received a $3.15 million signing bonus when he signed with the Padres, the second-largest signing bonus ever given to a Padres draft selection.

Bush was actually the Padres’ third pick, as they preferred either Stephen Drew or Jered Weaver, two NCAA talents.

Scott Boras, who was infamous for demanding large compensation for his clients, represented both of them. John Moores, the Padres’ owner, was hesitant to accept those criteria, so he chose Bush.
