During his high school career with the Ironmen, he started as an offensive tackle in his junior and senior years. Hennessy, who was rated as a three-star offensive tackle recruit by rivals.com, decided to play college football for Temple rather than accept any of the other offers he received from schools such as Air Force, Army, Florida Atlantic, Old Dominion, or Yale.
As a true freshman, Hennessy appeared in three games and started one of them at left guard. He then sat out the remainder of the season as a redshirt. In his redshirt freshman season, he started at center for the Owls and played in all but one game.
