Sheldon High School in Sacramento, California, is where Manning went to high school. After his first year of high school, he considered giving up baseball in favor of basketball.

In his junior year, he began to pay more attention to his pitching. During his senior year, his fastball had reached speeds of 99 mph (159 km/h) with a 1.91 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 40+13 innings pitched.

For baseball and basketball, he’s committed to Loyola Marymount University. Manning was taken by the Detroit Tigers in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft, nine spots ahead of his competition.

By signing with the Tigers, Manning received a signing bonus equal to the ninth overall pick’s slot value of $3.505,800.

Once signed by the Tigers, Manning was assigned to a minor league team in the Gulf Coast League, the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League, where he pitched no more than three innings each start in ten games.
