The Detroit Lions decided to take a chance on him and sign him as an undrafted free agent back in 2006. After serving his suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on substance abuse,

the Denver Broncos decided not to re-sign him and let him go. During the 2016 and 2017 NFL seasons, he set the records for the most consecutive field goal conversions of 50+ yards (14 field goals) and 55+.

Prater was named to the second team of All-State, the first team of all-conference, and All-Southwest Florida for his performance with the Lions. During his time playing high school football for the Estero Wildcats,

he was successful in 56 of 58 attempts to kick an extra point and scored 14 field goals, the longest of which was from 49 yards. Prater is known as the perfectionist of the Rugby punt,

which is now well-known throughout the NCAA and is used by several teams. Prater converted 84% of his kickoffs in the end zone for touchbacks. Prater is known as the “perfectionist” of the rugby punt.

As a field goal kicker, he was successful in ten of his thirteen attempts, and he kicked perfect four-for-four field goals from at least 40 yards out. In 2003, he averaged 47.9 yards on his punts,

a new school and MAC record. He also led the nation in punting that year. Prater was successful with 50 of 74 field goal attempts while playing for UCF over the course of four years and 46 games.

His longest field goal was 53 yards. The school record for field goals is 50, and with 258 points, he is now in fourth place all-time in the annals of the school’s scoring history.

In the 2005 Hawaii Bowl, he was referred to as the player who gave Nevada a 49–48 victory over UCF and was credited with costing UCF the game.
