A tight end with the New England Patriots of the National Football League, Matthew Ryan Sokol was born on November 9, 1995. His first roster position came in 2020 with the Los Angeles Chargers after he played collegiate football for Michigan State as an undrafted free agent. In 2022, Sokol committed to the Patriots.
After the 2019 NFL Draft, on April 27, Sokol signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Chargers. On August 31, 2019, he was released at the final roster cuts, and the following day, he was added to the team’s practice squad. On October 1, he rejoined the practice squad after being dismissed on September 18. On October 9, 2019, he was once more released.
On November 18, 2019, Sokol joined the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad.
On December 31, 2019, Sokol agreed to a reserve/future deal with the Detroit Lions. On September 5, 2020, he was released at the final roster cuts, and on October 21, 2020, he was added to the team’s practice squad. Three days later, he was freed.
On October 31, 2020, Sokol re-signed with the Los Angeles Chargers’ practice squad. In preparation for the team’s Week 16 matchup against the Denver Broncos, he was added to the active roster on December 26. However, following the game, he was returned to the practice squad. On January 1st, 2021, he received a promotion to the active roster.
As of August 31, 2021, the Chargers released Sokol. On September 2, 2021, Sokol re-signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad.
Sokol and the Detroit Lions agreed to a reserve/future contract on January 12, 2022. The 10th of May 2022 saw his release.
Sokol was taken off waivers by the New England Patriots on May 11, 2022.
