Matthew Kevin Thaiss is a Major League Baseball catcher for the Los Angeles Angels. In 2019, he debuted in the major leagues.

Thaiss grew up in Jackson Township, New Jersey, and went to Jackson Memorial High School.

He batted .343 in his career, with 17 home runs and 70 RBIs (RBI). He was picked in the 32nd round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft by the Boston Red Sox, however he did not sign and instead played for the University of Virginia Cavaliers.

Thaiss started 16 games at designated hitter as a freshman for Virginia in 2014. He batted.265 with seven RBIs in 68 at-bats.

Thaiss batted .323/.413/.552 with 10 home runs and 64 RBIs as a sophomore in 2015, starting 67 of 68 games. During the summer of 2015, he played for the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Hyannis Harbor Hawks.

Thaiss hit .375/.473/.578 with 10 home homers in 60 games last season. Thaiss was selected by the Los Angeles Angels with the 16th overall choice in the 2016 MLB draft as a result of his outstanding performance at Virginia.

Thaiss was assigned to the Orem Owlz by the Angels. He was promoted to the Burlington Bees after batting.276 with four home runs, 31 RBIs, and a .778 OPS in 52 games for Orem. At the end of the 2016 season, he was considered the Angels’ best prospect.
