Vierling was born in St. Louis, Missouri, area on September 16, 1996. His father was a member of the Kansas Jayhawks’ football team in college.

Throughout their childhoods, Matt and his younger brother Mark were both serious baseball players. Matt led the Cadets to the Class 5 Missouri state high school baseball championship in 2015.



They played on the varsity team for Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis for one season in 2015.

Matt, a senior, had been shifted from outfielder to shortstop, close to his brother at second base.

Vierling batted .451 with three home runs, 32 runs batted in (RBIs), and 31 runs scored to lead Christian Brothers in most offensive categories that year. As a pitcher, he had an 8-0 record and a 2.07 ERA (ERA)

His native St. Louis Cardinals selected him in the 30th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft, but he declined to sign with the team and instead chose to stay with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Vierling was a three-year member of the University of Notre Dame baseball team.

He was chosen third team All-Atlantic Coast Conference as a sophomore after hitting .330 with seven home runs and 42 RBIs (ACC).

He played with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League after his sophomore year, hitting .182 with them.

After hitting .310 with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs as a junior, Vierling was selected second team All-ACC.
