Jackie Slater, a former NFL lineman who is now in the Hall of Fame, and Annie Slater are Slater’s parents. He has a sibling who goes by the name David and was born in Long Beach, which is located in the state of California.

At Servite High School in Anaheim, California, he played football for two years and earned a letter of achievement. His teammate on those teams was Ryan Kalil. Both Prep Star and Rivals.com ranked him as a three-star player, and Prep Star gave him All-West honors.

In addition to that, the Serra League chose him for All-League honors not once but twice. During his junior year, he had 23 receptions for 333 yards and two touchdowns. He has 39 receptions for 707 yards and five touchdowns during his senior year of high school.

Slater was not only a successful cross-country runner in high school, but he also excelled in track. At the CIF State competition, he ran the 100 meters in 10.62 seconds, which was good enough for a tie for second place.

In the 200 meters, he ran 21.39 seconds, which was good enough for fourth place. His four-person relay team in the 100-meter dash won the CIF championship.

As a senior, he competed in track and field for Orange County and was honored as the 2003 Orange County Register Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Even now, he owns the school records for both the 100-meter and the 200-meter races.
