He carried for 2,009 yards and 38 touchdowns as a senior, earning first-team All-state honors from the WFCA and the Associated Press. He played collegiate football for the Wisconsin Badgers football team while attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He accumulated 98 yards on 20 tries while running for a touchdown in his three games as a freshman in 2011. In 2015, he waived his final year of college eligibility and made his NFL Draft selection. In his final college game, he gained 251 yards on the ground. In the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers selected Gordon with the 15th overall choice.

A two-year, $16 million deal with the Denver Broncos was his commitment in March 2020. He made his Broncos debut in Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans. In the course of the game, he made 15 attempts while rushing for 78 yards and a rushing touchdown. On April 27, 2022, Gordon re-signed with the Broncos for an additional year.
