He received his secondary education at Richmond Senior High School, which is located in Rockingham, North Carolina.

Melvin Ingram went to school at the University of South Carolina, and from 2007 through 2011, he was a member of the football squad for the South Carolina Gamecocks, which was coached by Steve Spurrier.

He was selected for the first team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC), and he was honored with All-American status by nearly every publication.

In the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers selected Melvin Ingram with the 18th overall pick, making him the team’s first overall pick. After that, on July 20, 2021, he became a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers after agreeing to terms of a one-year contract with the team.

On November 2, 2021, Melvin Ingram was included in a deal that sent him from the New Orleans Saints to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a selection in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
