Brantley was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the seventh round of the 2005 MLB Draft.

Brewers’ Rookie-level teams in the Pioneer League and Arizona League, respectively, were Brantley’s first stops after he was signed. It was 44 games for Arizona and 10 games for Helena, where he batted .347 and stole 14 bases, respectively.

In 2006, the Milwaukee Brewers sent Brantley to the Class A South Atlantic League’s West Virginia Power. In 108 games for West Virginia, he hit .300 with 24 steals.

Brantley started the 2007 season with the West Virginia Mountaineers. Brewers promoted Brantley to Huntsville Stars of Southern League Class AA, where he had an average of 251 games in the minor leagues.

Brantley had a .319 batting average with four home runs, 40 RBIs, and 28 stolen bases in 2008 while playing for Huntsville.

Cleveland transferred Brantley on October 3, 2008, in exchange for CC Sabathia and Matt LaPorta, Zach Jackson, and Rob Bryson as the player to be named later (PTBNL) in the Brewers’ July 7 deal to obtain CC Sabathia.

It was determined that Brantley and Taylor Green were the best candidates for the PTBNL award.

Cleveland and Milwaukee had agreed that if Milwaukee made the MLB post-season in 2008, Cleveland would be able to choose. Brantley was selected by the Indians because the Brewers qualified for the playoffs.
