At the University of New Mexico, Garver played college baseball. In 2012, he was an all-star in the Cape Cod Baseball League while playing collegiate summer baseball for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of New Mexico.

During the 2013 MLB draft, he was selected in the ninth round by the Minnesota Twins. Elizabethton Twins, where he batted.243 in 56 games, was his first professional team.



Between his time with the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2014 and the Fort Myers Miracle in 2015, when his average was.329 over 22 games, he batted.245.

He played in the Arizona Fall League after the 2015 season. With the Chattanooga Lookouts and the Rochester Red Wings, Garver hit.270 in 2016, with 11 home runs and 66 RBI in the process.

For the second year in a row, he participated in the Arizona Fall League. After the season, the Twins made him a member of their 40-man roster.
