The Brewers received the choice with which Haniger was picked as part of the compensation package for losing slugger Prince Fielder to the Detroit Tigers during the 2011-12 offseason.

The Brewers traded Haniger and Anthony Bandas for Gerardo Parra on July 31, 2014. Haniger was assigned to the Mobile BayBears of the Southern League. Haniger, Jean Segura, and Zac Curtis were traded to the Seattle Mariners on November 23, 2016, in exchange for Taijuan Walker and Ketel Marte by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
