After high school, he made a commitment to play collegiate football with the Michigan State Spartans.
He participated in two games there and registered one sack before redshirting in 2015. 2016 saw him leave Michigan State and enroll at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. In 2017, he relocated once more to Mississippi State University to play for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

In the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins selected Sweat with the 26th overall choice. He not only got a sack against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15 of the 2021 NFL season, but he also forced a turnover. The Commanders exercised Sweat’s contract’s fifth-year option in April 2022.
